Ornamental Plant Care Guidelines
These general tips apply to most ornamental trees and shrubs listed in our catalog. For plant-specific tolerances, see the “Details & Care” section on each plant page.
Watering
- Establishment period: Water deeply 2–3 times per week for the first year.
- After establishment: Most ornamentals require weekly deep watering in dry spells; drought-tolerant species may need less.
Fertilizing
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring and midsummer.
- Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the season (promotes tender growth prone to frost damage).
Mulching
- Maintain a 2–3″ mulch layer around the base, keeping mulch pulled back from the trunk.
- Mulch helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning
- Prune for shape and structure in late winter or after flowering, depending on species.
- Remove crossing, dead, or diseased branches promptly.
Pests & Diseases
- Monitor for common issues like aphids, scale, or mildew; treat early with horticultural oil or approved fungicides.
- Encourage beneficial insects and avoid overfertilization that attracts pests.
Planting Tips
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper.
- Backfill with native soil; avoid heavy amendments that create “pot effect.”
- Stake only if necessary and remove stakes within one year.
