Ornamental Care

Care instructions and guidelines for Ornamental.

Ornamental Plant Care Guidelines

These general tips apply to most ornamental trees and shrubs listed in our catalog. For plant-specific tolerances, see the “Details & Care” section on each plant page.

Watering

  • Establishment period: Water deeply 2–3 times per week for the first year.
  • After establishment: Most ornamentals require weekly deep watering in dry spells; drought-tolerant species may need less.

Fertilizing

  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring and midsummer.
  • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the season (promotes tender growth prone to frost damage).

Mulching

  • Maintain a 2–3″ mulch layer around the base, keeping mulch pulled back from the trunk.
  • Mulch helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Pruning

  • Prune for shape and structure in late winter or after flowering, depending on species.
  • Remove crossing, dead, or diseased branches promptly.

Pests & Diseases

  • Monitor for common issues like aphids, scale, or mildew; treat early with horticultural oil or approved fungicides.
  • Encourage beneficial insects and avoid overfertilization that attracts pests.

Planting Tips

  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper.
  • Backfill with native soil; avoid heavy amendments that create “pot effect.”
  • Stake only if necessary and remove stakes within one year.
